Development Boom Meets Wildlife Displacement
Lakewood is being transformed by development at a pace that's pushing wildlife from cleared lots directly into existing homes. As bulldozers clear the next parcel, squirrels, raccoons, and bats don't relocate to distant forests - they move next door. The construction noise you hear? Wildlife hears it too, and they're looking for somewhere quieter. Like your attic.
Why Lakewood?
Rapid development displaces woodland wildlife into residential areas faster than natural dispersal would, concentrating animals in remaining structures
Common Wildlife in Lakewood
- squirrels
- raccoons
- bats
- rodents
New Construction, Inherited Wildlife Problems
Lakewood's construction boom includes both brand-new homes and extensive renovations. Both create wildlife issues. New construction on former woodland lots finds wildlife returning to 'their' territory. Renovations disturb animals already in residence. Either way, wildlife doesn't understand property lines or construction timelines.
Local Housing Stock
- Brand-new single-family construction on former woodland lots
- Multi-family developments replacing natural habitat
- Historic Lake Carasaljo area homes surrounded by development pressure
- Georgian Court neighborhood's mature properties with established wildlife patterns
Common Entry Point Issues
- New homes built on cleared lots where wildlife immediately returns seeking former habitat
- Multi-family construction with many units creating countless potential entry points
- Renovation disturbing wildlife in residence who then spread through the structure
- Development pressure pushing wildlife into remaining older neighborhoods
Lakewood Case Study
The New Construction Wildlife Emergency
01 The Problem
A family moved into their brand-new home in a recently completed development. Within two weeks, they heard scratching in the attic every night. The builder insisted the home was sealed - they'd just had final inspection.
Location: Western Lakewood
02 What We Found
A colony of displaced flying squirrels had been living in trees on the lot before construction. When the home was built, they simply moved back into what they considered their territory - entering through a gap where the roof met a decorative dormer. The gap was within spec for final inspection but perfect for flying squirrels.
03 The Solution
We removed 14 flying squirrels over two weeks and sealed the dormer gap with color-matched steel flashing. The builder now includes a wildlife inspection in their punch list.
The Result
The homeowner was back to peaceful sleep within a month. The builder added wildlife exclusion review to their standard closing process.
