Why Newark Has a Serious Raccoon Problem

Newark's combination of dense restaurants, aging infrastructure, and accessible dumpsters makes it raccoon paradise. The Ironbound District alone reports more raccoon calls than some entire NJ counties. These masked bandits don't just raid trash - they've learned that Newark's century-old brownstones have deteriorating rooflines that make perfect attic entrances.

Why Newark?

The restaurant density in downtown and Ironbound creates abundant food sources, while historic buildings provide easy shelter access

Common Wildlife in Newark

  • raccoons
  • rodents
  • squirrels
  • bats

Newark's Historic Buildings: Beautiful But Vulnerable

Newark's architectural heritage is also its wildlife weakness. Victorian-era brownstones, early 1900s apartment buildings, and post-war construction each have distinct vulnerabilities that wildlife has exploited for generations.

Local Housing Stock

  • Pre-war brownstones with ornate but deteriorating cornices
  • Multi-family walkups with shared attic spaces
  • Commercial buildings with flat roofs and HVAC penetrations
  • Post-war row homes with aluminum soffits

Common Entry Point Issues

  • Decorative cornices that have rotted and created entry points
  • Shared attic spaces in multi-family buildings allowing colony spread
  • Fire escapes providing wildlife highways to upper floors
  • Basement-to-roof chases in older buildings

Newark Case Study

The Ironbound Restaurant Row Raccoon

01 The Problem

A popular Ferry Street restaurant noticed their walk-in refrigerator wasn't cooling properly. Repair techs found something unexpected - a family of raccoons had nested above the drop ceiling, and their waste had clogged the rooftop condenser.

Location: Ironbound District

02 What We Found

Our inspection revealed the raccoons were entering through a deteriorated soffit above the third-floor apartment. They'd created a highway from the roof, through the building's chase, to the space above the restaurant.

03 The Solution

We trapped and removed a mother raccoon and four juveniles over 5 days, then sealed 12 entry points from roof to basement. The building owner hadn't realized the chase connected all floors.

The Result

No raccoon activity in 18 months. The restaurant owner avoided serious health code violations and equipment damage.

Unique Challenges in Newark

  1. 01

High-density housing means one building's problem quickly becomes the whole block's problem

  2. 02

Restaurant and commercial waste creates year-round food sources for wildlife

  3. 03

Many buildings have deferred maintenance due to rental economics

  4. 04

Fire escape structures provide wildlife access to upper floors

  5. 05

Basement-to-roof chases in older buildings create internal highways for pests

  6. 06

Proximity to Newark Airport disturbs wildlife patterns seasonally
