A Tale of Two Woodbridges: Rodents and Squirrels

Woodbridge Township isn't one place - it's 11 distinct neighborhoods with dramatically different wildlife. Sewaren and Port Reading near the waterfront deal with rodent pressure from industrial and shipping activity. Colonia and Avenel, with their wooded lots and mature trees, are squirrel territory. Fords and Iselin, more densely developed, see both. Your wildlife problem depends heavily on which part of Woodbridge you call home.

Why Woodbridge?

Inland neighborhoods have mature suburban development with significant tree cover, while waterfront areas face industrial rodent pressure - making Woodbridge a microcosm of New Jersey wildlife issues

11 Neighborhoods, 11 Different Housing Stocks

Woodbridge Township's housing ranges from Colonia's sprawling colonials on wooded lots to Port Reading's tightly-packed row homes. This diversity means no single approach works township-wide. A Colonia home with cathedral ceilings and massive attic space requires different assessment than a Sewaren cape cod near the waterfront.

01Local Housing Stock

Colonia colonials with large attics and wooded lots
Avenel split-levels from the 1960s suburban boom
Iselin capes and ranches on smaller lots
Waterfront homes in Sewaren with flooding history

02Common Entry Point Issues

Wooded lot homes with trees touching or overhanging roofs
Large attic spaces that go uninspected for years
Attached garages in split-levels creating hidden pathways
Foundation issues in waterfront areas creating ground-level entry
Woodbridge Case Study

The Colonia Raccoon Family

01 The Problem

A homeowner in Colonia heard heavy thumping in the attic in March. They assumed it was squirrels. By April, the sounds included what sounded like crying babies. The attic had become a raccoon nursery.

Location: Colonia

02 What We Found

A mother raccoon had entered through a rotted soffit return where the roof overhang met the garage. She gave birth to four kits. The family was using the entire 1,800 square foot attic space, with separate latrine and nesting areas.

03 The Solution

We waited until the kits were mobile (per NJ wildlife regulations), then installed one-way exclusion. The family was humanely evicted over two weeks. All soffit returns were reinforced with steel mesh, and the homeowner's overhanging tree limbs were flagged for trimming.

The Result

Complete exclusion by June. The homeowner had the attic professionally cleaned and new insulation installed. Three months of raccoon habitation caused significant insulation and structural damage.
